Installation and Usage of Enigmail

1.Overview

Enigmail is a seamlessly integrated security add-on for Mozilla Thunderbird. It allows you to use OpenPGP to encrypt and digitally sign your emails and to decrypt and verify messages you receive.

Enigmail is a free software. It can be freely used, modified and distributed under the terms of the Mozilla Public License.

1)Thunderbird download and install

Install thunderbird Setup 38.7.0.exe and add an Email account . You can download Thunderbird from the internet or from the attachment. Just double-click thunderbird Setup 38.7.0.exe and follow the steps to install.

  • Add Email account. Right-click the blank space of left sidebar and select “Settings”.


  • In the pop-up dialog box, click “Account Actions”-“Add Mail Account” to add email account.


  • Type your name, your email address, password and click “Continue” .


  • Thunderbird will check the configuration of the email service you have entered, click “Done”.



  • Click “OK” to finish the account configuration.

2)Installation and Usage of Enigmail

  • Start Mozilla Thunderbird application.


  • Once the add­on is installed, restart the application to take effect.


  • Once the the application restarted, you will be asked to setup your Enigmail profile. Click Next to the setup.


  • Select the beginner setup and click on Next.


  • You will most probably be prompt to install GnuPG if this is your first time setting up the PGP mail .Click on Install GnuPGP and it will download the component into your workstaion.


  • A separate window will appear for the GnuPGP installation . Select your preferred language and click OK to paoceed.


  • Click Next to paoceed.


  • Click Next to paoceed.


  • Click Next to paoceed.


  • Click Next to paoceed.


  • Click Next to paoceed.


  • Click Next to paoceed.


  • Click Next and them Finish to complete.


  • Go back to the Thunderbird and click Next to proceed.


  • You will be asked to create your key pair here and the Passphrase is needed.Ensure the email address is email address that you want to use for email protection.Once the Passphrase is inserted ,click Next to continue.


  • Wait for the key generation to complete,you will be asked create a Revocation Certificate.Enter your Passphrase to complete this process.
  • To enable PGP for your eamil account ,right cilick your account and select Settings.
  • Select OpenPGP and enable the feature by checking on Enable OpenPGP support (Enigmail)for this identity.


  • TO ensure your eamil messages are encrypted ,ensure that you click on the encrypt message icon below.


  • To send your public key out, go to the Thunderbird Menu→Enigmail→Key management.


  • Right click on your account name and click on Export keys to file .On the next window ,click on Export Public Key Only.


  • You will receive a file with .asc extension. You will need to send this file to anyone who you want them to send an encrypted email message to you .
